絲の夢
本作品はレースや刺繍が全面に施された衣類である付襟（つけえり）をモデルとして観察し、ひも状の粘土を積みあげた中空の塊から全てを手で彫り出している。モデルとなった付襟は６０年から 100 年ほど前にフランスで製作され、身に着けられていたものである。
長年、古着を観察しながらその皴襞を観察し、それを身にまとった人間の存在の記憶を、布とは異なる時間性を持つ焼き物に移し換えるという作品を制作し続ける中で、私は衣類のレースや刺繍などの細部に自然と心惹かれてきた。レースや刺繍といった衣類の細部には、それを身に着けていた女性の思いが一層強く籠っているように感じながら制作をしている。
編まれた糸の重なりの中に、それを身に着けていた女性の香りやその身体の取り巻いていた空気が沁み込んでいるように感じるのだ。たとえそれが、機械によって作られる今日の大量生産の衣服であっても。
現在私たちの様々な日常着に使用され楽しまれていることからは想像し難いほどに、かつてレース製作は一国の経済基盤を左右するほどの産業であり、富と権力の象徴であった。華やかなレースの美とその消費の世界とは裏腹に、レース製作は職人である人間に非常に過酷な労働を強いるものでもあった。 時代を下り本作のモデルとなったつけ襟の持ち主の女性たちは、その美しい細部に自分自身のありたい姿を重ね合わせ、自らの身体の一部のようにそれを身に着けたかもしれない。レースの目や花模様の表情を、自分を表わすにふさわしいものとして他の付襟のなかから選びだしたのかもしれない。レースの細やかな編み目には、レースの華やかさとその歴史の暗部のように、「存在」に纏わる人間の欲望や様々な感情が編み込まれているような感覚を抱く。
様々な繊維でできた布や衣類とは対照的な時間性を持つ焼き物に、私の身体を通じてこれらの姿を手作業で彫り込む。布から陶へメディアの置き換えを行いながら、それぞれの物質のもつ時間性や焼き物の実存感、手作業によって内包される身体性や時間、古着のもつ記憶と私自身の記憶を静かに重ね合わせながら、人間の命の時間について思いを巡らせる。
